The Zhabdrung's sacred trees are located below Chongra village. Legend says that Zhabdrung fled from Tibet and stay at Laya Chongra for three nights; Tibetans heard Zhabdrung was staying at Laya and they came to Laya to murder Zhabdrung. Through his magical power, Zhabdrung change all the trees into armies. After seeing this, Tibetans went back to their homeland. When Zhabdrung was host a night at Laya Chongra, the Tsang Desi Phuntsho Namgyal heard that the Zhabdrung was at Laya Chongra; he decided to send his soldiers to murder Zhabdrung. When Tibetan soldiers were reached at the scene with imminent effect, Zhabdrung made a plan, which would make the Tibetan soldiers believe that, through his magical power, he turned all these trees into Bhutanese armies and Tibetan thought that a large number of armies were standing there, thus, the plan to attack was cancelled and went back. Today these trees were considered to be sacred trees. If people found cutting trees from this site, they would be imposed a fine because some Nyes (sacred sites) were also hard to identify and people hardly ever visit those Nyes. Forests are a revered repository of traditional beliefs and customs, and a rich source of myth, folklore and legend. The point of narrating on the Nyes is to recognize the sacred sites and provides information, which were blessed by Zhabdrung Rinpoche. There are numerous stories on cutting trees and defiling areas, considered to be abodes of deities and sacred sites, have resulting in sickness, spread of disease and calamities befalling on community. These beliefs help in instilling respect for nature, where the ultimate benefit is for the people.
