Sonam Choden sings “Dagala Mountain Slope” (Darkar Lamö la Zhöl), a song about a beautiful lady from Dagana Kalizingkha who resided in Dagala and herded cattle. According to Loden Foundation researcher Sonam Chophel, Dzongpon Auechu Nim from Laya was passing through Dagala when he met a mystical and beautiful lady called Penzo Bum. The two fell in love. This beautiful traditional love story tells that Dzongpon Auechu Nim composed the zhungdra song “Dagala Mountain Slope” to pay tribute to the beauty of Penzo Bum. In the lyrics to the song, Dagala is described as the blessed land of the gorgeous Jomo Mountain, the home of his beloved Penzo Bum. There, the large lakes and high mountains are Penzo Bum’s ornaments. Penzo Bum is also called Ama Jomo, or the “mighty mountain.” Ama Jomo was one of the six peaks of the mountain Jomolhari, the abode of the six sisters. However, because Ama Jomo did not get along with her sisters she was denied the opportunity to possess a mountain peak; instead, she was given a little share of gold, turquoise, salt and tea. That did not please Ama Jomo, so she threw away all her possessions. The gold, turquoise and so forth turned into lakes as their names indicate in the song: the gold became the lake Saetsho; the turquoise, the lake Yutsho; the salt, the lake Satsho and so forth.
